Styling with Pampas Grass
Pampas grass is a wonderful design element, and can bring in a natural element while being extremely low maintenance. It has gained popularity among interior designers due to its ease and versatility. It brings a natural element to a space, similar to a flower arrangement, but is neutral enough to go with just about any color palette and style. It provides a soft textural quality that delicate flowers do not, and the fact that it is low maintenance and long-lasting is definitely a plus.
SOURCING & MAINTAINING
We love having an excuse to go to the flower district on 28th street in Manhattan, you can find pretty much anything there. If you don’t have access to a local flower market though, Amazon has a surprisingly decent online selection.
A great trick to keep Pampas Grass from shedding is to use hairspray! Just give each stem a light even coating, and keep them separate and upright until dry. I prefer to use an aerosol hairspray for a lighter more even application, other spray bottles create a heavier spray that can weigh down the delecatie plumes.
STYLING TIPS
Because Pampas grass doesn’t like (or need) to sit in water, it really pairs best with other dried plants such as leaves, twigs, and dried flowers. Dried herbs are another great option because they give off a nice aroma. Generally though, I feel that pampas grass can really make a statement on its own, it doesn’t really need any extra bells and whistles.
There are so many vases that work well for styling with pampas grass! We really love anything by local Greenpoint ceramist Sin, she has some really unique and beautiful options.
If you want something with a bit of color, this vase is really elegant, and comes in a variety of colors and sizes.
Pampas grass can be really tall (up to 10ft or more!), so this floor vase by Muuto gives you some flexibility with the taller versions.
Pampas grass works well for just about everyone. It can last pretty much forever, doesn’t need to be watered, or need to be placed in front of a sunny window. It provides a similar effect as fresh flowers, without all the maintenance...unless your cat takes a liking to it.
