LOFT IN sOhO

Soho, NYC

The Greene Street Loft is situated in a classic SoHo loft building, and had not been renovated in over 40 years. Shapeless Studio was asked to completely reimagine the space and all the finishes. The client requested a primary bedroom with double-height ceilings, abundant storage space, and a secondary bedroom in the loft space above the kitchen and bathroom.

The double-height living space is the heart of the apartment, with a warm grey paint finish and natural wood and stone elements throughout. Every detail was considered to maintain the feel of the authentic New York artists' loft while providing modern amenities and convenient storage.

Original features, such as the exposed brick perimeter walls, were treated with a natural limewash to brighten the space while preserving their character. Exposed wooden structural elements, including heavy-duty lintels and central beams, were retained to maintain the authentic loft aesthetic. The original wide-plank cedar flooring, a remnant of the building’s warehouse past, was preserved and painted with durable marine-grade paint, adding a subtle sheen and continuity throughout the space.

In the bathroom, dark burgundy Zellige tiles provide a rich, tactile flooring, while a lively marble vanity introduces a touch of color and pattern.

Addressing the challenge of bringing natural light and ventilation into the lofted areas, custom oak windows and doors were designed to open and close as needed, complemented by linen drapery for privacy.

The kitchen, integrated beneath the loft, features cabinetry painted to match the walls and panel-ready appliances, allowing it to recede into the background. An oak island, situated between two cast iron columns, anchors the space and echoes the materiality of the custom loft windows above.
